Grading Specifications for Solid Wood Flooring

Clear

Mostly heartwood with a minimum number of character marks and discoloration, providing a uniform appearance while allowing for all heartwood natural color variations. Bundled 1-7’ Minimum Average is 3.5′ / Bundled 2-10’ Minimum Average is 4.0’.

Select & Better

Mostly heartwood with a minimum number of character marks and discoloration that provides a uniform appearance while allowing for natural color variations. Bundled 1-7’ Minimum Average is 3.0’ / Bundled 2-10’ Minimum Average is 3.5’.

#1 Common

Contains prominent variations in coloration and varying characters such as knots mineral and small checks. Bundled 1-7’ Minimum Average is 2.5’ / Bundled 2-10’ Minimum Average is 3.0’.

#2 Common

May contain sound natural variations of the forest product and manufacturing imperfections. The purpose is to furnish a solution for a utility use floor. Will have drastic color variation and large knots. Bundled 1-7’ Minimum Average is 2.0’ / Bundled 2-10’ Minimum Average is 2.5’.

Character Grade

Grading specifications may be different when noted on sales order and or invoice. Material is sold as nested bundles with a mix of lengths. Full-length boards of 7’ or 10’ boards are NOT guaranteed. Fantastic Floor cannot guarantee a particular mix of specific lengths, only that the average length will comply with the grading specifications as indicated below or according to NWFA or NOFMA standards.

There are no NWFA grading rules in relation to Engineered flooring at this time. Each mill or manufacturer has its own guidelines and the buyer is highly encouraged to request this information prior to purchase.
